Marriage is considered to be a sacred bond, different countries or different societies of the world have different methods or types of marriage,
In India too, many types of marriage are found in different religions, this article presents an interesting description on the eight major types of marriages in Hinduism.

8 types of marriage in Hinduism


8 types of marriage in Hinduism are first mentioned in Manusmriti (मनुस्मृति).

In Manu Smriti these marriages are divided into two major parts.

The first part is depicted as a plausible marriage(prashnsaniya vivah).

And the second part is depicted as condemnable marriage (Nindaniya vivah).


The following 4 types of marriage are covered under laudatory marriage(प्रशंसनीय विवाह)


Brahma Marriage (ब्रह्मा विवाह)

This marriage was done by the parents of the girl after finding the eligible groom and after the girl was an adult, with complete legal legislation.

Brahma marriage(ब्रह्मा विवाह ) is considered as the best marriage,


Dev marriage(देव विवाह)

Dev marriage was also a type of Hindu marriage.

In a deva marriage, the girl was married to a priest or scholar Brahmina who performed the yajna.

This was done for some religious purpose or religious purpose.


Arsh marriage(अर्श विवाह)


In this type of marriage, the marriage work is done by repaying the girl's value which is (generally defined as Godan).

Godan was performed by the father or guardian of the girl.


Prajapatya marriage (प्रजापत्य विवाह)

In this type of marriage, the consent of the girl was not compulsory, in which the marriage of the girl was done by the parents in a wealthy or prestigious school.

The following are four types of condemnable marriages(निंदनीय विवाह).


Asura marriage -(असुर विवाह)

In this type of marriage, the sale of the girl was done in exchange of money, that is, the girl was married in exchange for money from the groom's side.


Gandharva marriage-(गंधर्व विवाह)


 This marriage used to be on the basis of a love affair, that is, couples in this love married by mutual consent,

It did not have to be the consent of the family or clan.

In the present form, it can also be generally understood as love marriage.


Monster Marriage -(राक्षस विवाह)


In this type of marriage, she was married to the girl by forcefully abducting her against her will or threatening her.


Paishach  marriage - (पैशाच विवाह)


This marriage is done by betrayal. In this, forced marriage of a girl in a state of sleep or mental debility was called Paishach Marriage.
